The comet is a strong symbol for CHANEL, and am thinking in particular of the Comète pendant from the 1932 high jewelry collection. "When worn open and placed directly on the skin, it evokes the enveloping effect of a perfume on the skin". - Says Olivier Polge. Polge, therefore, had to rely on his imagination. “Once find an idea that feel is meaningful and this is the part like have to create a fantasy, and in the case of Comète it was quite visual,” he says. The perfumer began thinking about stardust, equating the light traced by cosmic particles across the night sky to the olfactory trail left hanging in the air by a fragrance. That gave him the idea to create a perfume that was simultaneously powdery and luminous—two types of scent often considered mutually exclusive in the world of fragrance. When developing the accord, Polge considered a very specific type of French cherry, griotte, which smells earthy, versus sugary and sweet. The dry down is exceptional, lingering on it becomes warm and creamy and the powder and musk begin to blend with your own skin chemistry. Plumey, powdery, archly classical with its burst of aldehydes, iris and cherry blossom, (but not dowdy), to me this is reminiscent of Guerlain Insolence just with far less hair spray, more aplomb.
